The key priorities concerning the BSEC activities in the field of environmental protection are defined by Goal 5 Environmental Protection and Conservation” of the “BSEC Economic Agenda: towards an Enhanced BSEC Partnership”, adopted in 2012.

The main activities, concerning mainly the promotion of cooperation in the field of environmental protection, are carried out by the BSEC Working Group on Environmental Protection which meets regularly every second year or whenever necessary. The BSEC Ministers in charge of Environment met three times (2006, 2011 and 2012) and adopted important Declarations which serve as guidance for the activities in this domain.

Five projects in the field of environmental protection were financed under the BSEC Project Development Fund.

The Working Group elaborated the “BSEC Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the Black Sea”, which was adopted by the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on 15 December 2017.

The Strategy is a timely response to Goal 5 of the “BSEC Economic Agenda”, which is related to developing plans for mitigation and adaptation measures to address the impact of climate change.

The Working Group has been focusing on the implementation of this Strategy and examines currently the idea of hiring a consultant for a period of one or two years, in order to prepare an action plan/report to this effect.

The Working Group also serves as a knowledge sharing tool through discussing the different projects implemented by the Member States and the Secretariat in the area of environmental protection. The  Member States also discuss about topics such as preservation of the Black Sea and its marine environment; conservation, protection, improvement, recovery and rational use of environment and natural resources; elimination of single use plastic; minimization of the negative impacts on the environment and exclusion of the overexploitation and illegal use of natural resources; green, resilient and low carbon growth; air quality legislation; waste management strategies; increase of protected areas; and the new updated National Determined Contributions (NDC) for mitigating the Climate Change effects.
