Since the Working Group on Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information has no Country Coordinator, the BSEC PERMIS temporarily performs this function.

Harmonization and Exchange of Economic and Social Statistical Data and Information is one of the goals stipulated in the “Economic Agenda Towards an Enhanced BSEC Partnership.”
During its first meeting in October 1992, Working Group on Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information agreed that major task of its international statistical activities in the framework of BSEC must be to provide the BSEC Working Groups in time with comparable information.
In order to ensure data compatibility and to create the basis for a common economic language, the Member States agreed on a need to harmonize statistical methods and definitions and to utilize international classifications in all their activities. They agreed on the necessity at a regional level for:
- A system of exchange of statistical data and economic information;
- The compilation of data;
- The realization of common projects;
- Representation under a regional identity in the international for a technical assistance program;
- A joint program for the harmonization of statistical methods and definitions and the use of international classification.
The Member States also agreed to establish within the State Institute of Statistics of Turkey the BSEC Coordination Centre for the Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information. It issued a compilation of statistics, namely Social and Economic Indicators of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Countries and Turkey’s Foreign Trade with the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Countries.
The last Meeting of the Working Group was held in Ankara on 15-16 April 1997. During this Meeting the Working Group agreed on the Working Program for the BSEC Coordination Center for Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information, reviewed content of several BSEC statistical publications, discussed the issue of improvement of the questionnaire for collecting statistical data and economic information.
The Center also organized a Workshop on Industrial Statistics held in June 1998, aiming to lay the ground for the harmonization of statistics BSEC-wide. This initial work needs to be pursued. While the experts from the Member States displayed keen interest to proceed in this direction, inadequate trained personnel and lack of funds appear to be major obstacles in the transition to the international system.
Since that period no Member State has expressed its willingness to organize the Meeting or to assume the duty of the Country-Coordinator of the Working Group.
BSEC PERMIS continues its efforts towards reactivation the work of the Coordination Centre for the Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information.
Meeting of the BSEC Working Group on Trade and Economic Development (Istanbul, 25-26 April 2013) emphasized the importance of exchanging information on developments in the BSEC Member States related to economic and trade relations pertaining to the economic cooperation in the region, in particular through electronic means.
During the Meeting of the BSEC Working Group on Trade and Economic Development (Istanbul, 31 October – 1 November 2013), the BSEC Coordination Center for the Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information was invited to elaborate a questionnaire regarding the type of statistical data that might be exchanged through this Center.
